The Finance and Financial Control Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved two requests related to sports betting. The committee, chaired by federal deputy João Carlos Bacelar  will debate measures to combat illegal gambling and tax evasion. The meetings do not yet have set dates.

According to Bahia Notícias, one of the approved requests is authored by deputy Luciano Zucco. The parliamentarian proposes holding a hearing with representatives from the Executive and Judicial branches, as well as the financial system, to discuss the oversight of financial institutions operating in the illegal betting market.

The other request is authored by Bacelar and aims to hold a public hearing to discuss ways to combat illegal companies offering fixed-odds betting. According to the deputy, despite the regulation of the market, there continue to be reports of unregulated platforms emerging.

Bacelar stated, “The damage caused by these illegal operators is profound, as they not only compromise the country’s fiscal system but also put the financial health of many citizens at risk who bet without any regulation or adequate protection. The lack of efficient oversight and clear measures for the protection of bettors and the promotion of responsible gaming further exacerbates the vulnerability of individuals participating in these platforms.”

For the lawmaker, to build a safer environment for bettors, it is also important to combat tax evasion and reinforce actions to promote responsible gaming. The deputy suggests inviting several authorities to the hearing, including the Secretary of Prizes and Bets of the Ministry of Finance, Regis Dudena; the General Director of the Federal Police, Andrei Augusto Passos Rodrigues; and the National Secretary of Consumer Affairs, Wadih Damous Filho, among others.

“Our goal is to strengthen initiatives that seek to regulate the sector and ensure a safe and responsible environment for all involved, as well as to ensure due federal revenue collection and the protection of citizens’ rights,” Bacelar said.
