Dispensing with reels and paylines, mobile fishing-shooting games have become a distinct and successful genre of games in Asia. G3 talks to Ray Lee, Director of Business Development at TaDa Gaming to learn more about this phenomenon.
TaDa Gaming is making waves with its fishing-shooting games. How did TaDa Gaming establish this novel game concept?
The original concept was physical arcade machines designed by our parent company, International Games Systems. They saw the opportunity to take these games online and quickly became the number one provider for mobile fishing-shooting games across Asia. TaDa Gaming was created as a standalone company to deliver this Asian innovation but tailored for Europe and Latin America.
The games have been received positively by casino platform operators, especially those attracting second/third generation digital natives. Players crossing from video to iGaming expect multiplayer mode, collaborative efforts and leaderboards for community engagement which our games deliver. Once players discover Happy Fishing or Mega Fishing, we always see increasing rounds played and repeat plays as these games resonate with multiple audiences.
Could you talk us through how the gameplay and mechanics work?
Fishing-shooting games are easy to grasp, but get more challenging the more you play. That’s what makes them so immersive as they are a mix of luck and skill. The games are usually set underwater with the whole screen as the game’s parameter. Players shoot at fish or characters, which are part of the storyline, to score hits. Each character has its own reward level and/or can trigger a bonus game. The bonus games are high impact with whirlpools or explosions. Information is shown on screen as to wins, ammo levels and tips for gameplay, but these details can be muted as players become more adept. Players choose a strategy either to focus on high paying targets or to keep wager levels low to maximise the length of rounds played whilst learning where the target points are on each character. Shooting the smaller value/easier to catch fish is similar to betting on the 1-12 range in a roulette game, while shooting at a Big Boss is comparable to betting on a single number with a lower chance of winning but a higher payout.
What qualities differentiate these games from traditional slots?
The obvious difference is that there are no reels or paylines; the whole screen is the game space, so players need eyes everywhere and quick reflexes. Fishing-shooting releases also offer social gaming through multiplayer capability, with up to four players in one game at any time. All wins are distributed individually so players benefit from community gaming while keeping their winnings separate. Again, this is something that players have reported on favourably alongside the real challenges that these games can provide.
Could you share some data to demonstrate how well fishing-shooting titles are resonating? Does performance differ across markets?
We have seen active player growth with each client integration, and longer session player time in comparison to other styles of release. Interestingly, players will often play both slots and fishing-shooting at the same casino, extending their screen time and placing higher wagers.
Plus, leaderboard events generate on average more than a 20 per cent further uplift in bet value. Currently we are seeing the strongest performance in Brazil and Italy, but Greece is catching up.
What’s your market expansion strategy in Europe and LatAm?
We tailor partnerships to enable us to improve localisation and so deliver a better experience for the players. We translate and localise our releases in up to 25 languages and actively secure both global and national brands to gain international and local perspectives. We are also pursuing licences in the UK and Romania, in addition to our Maltese, Swedish and Greek accreditations, and certifying our games for all markets.
From a product perspective, will the fishing-shooting games be at the forefront of this expansion strategy? Are there other titles and gamification tools within the portfolio that will share the spotlight?
Fishing-shooting games are and will continue to be a significant driver of new business across all regions, including North America. Our TriLuck, DARKREEL and SurgeReel series were all successfully launched in 2024. Fortune Gems remains our top played series, and we will continue to add titles to our series which develop both gameplay and narratives for enhanced player connection and engagement.
We launched gamification tools GiftCode and WIN CARD as a cost-effective way to increase sign up, increase deposits, retention, repeat plays, and overall loyalty. GiftCode is a one click use gamification tool and WIN CARD is an ongoing reward system that requires players to complete missions. There is minimal set up from the operators’ side as we integrate the tools initially. We work with the casino platform to develop the promotions, and we will add more tools in 2025.
What’s next for TaDa Gaming’s fishing-shooting portfolio?
January 2025 will see the launch of a new style of zombie fishing-shooting game. Our design team have not held back on creative gameplay and immersive ways to win in a constantly developing narrative, so we are expecting Fortune Zombie to create a significant impact. We continuously promote our fishing-shooting games and have new partnerships to announce across multiple jurisdictions. Choosing the right casino platform partner is critical so we ensure that we work together to deliver the learning and information players need to really understand these games.
What will TaDa Gaming be showcasing on the stand at ICE?
Booth 2B42 will be the place to be for fishing-shooting games. We have an Experience Zone specifically to demonstrate how the games work and what they deliver for casino operators in terms of entertainment, engagement and retention. In addition, our extensive portfolio of slots, table and crash games alongside our gamification tools and on stand competition will deliver a great experience for all our visitors and show just why we are making such waves in iGaming.
